12:00 – 2:00     WHAT IS AND WHAT IS NOT A LEARNING DISABILITY?

Marn Frank, LDA

Conference Room 6

The National Institute for Literacy estimates that 20% of the general population experience significant learning difficulties when acquiring or using new information. Of this subgroup, 7-15% meet criteria for the diagnosis of a specific learning disability (SLD or LD) impacting the academic areas of reading, writing, or math. This practitioner circle will provide current definitions and criteria to “rule in” LD along with other factors that may “rule out” LD for native and non-native English speakers. LDA of Minnesota’s menu of assessments provided at no cost to ABE students will be explained and the screening/application made available. In addition, strategies for “LD-appropriate” direct and systematic reading instruction will be shared because it is further estimated that 80-90% of persons with LD struggle in the area of reading.
