"ESL Educators,

My name is Melissa Mendelson and I am currently finishing my M.A. TESL degree at the University of Minnesota. Before I begin my final project I'm doing a little preliminary research to determine a topic that, hopefully, will result in useful information for adult ESL educators. Any feedback that you can give me on the following issues would be wonderful. Throughout my teaching experience, particularly in community education settings working with refugees and immigrants, I have noticed a lack of classroom skills on the part of many students. Here are some of the issues that I have come across:

*Students often are unable (or unwilling) to organize their papers, worksheets and materials related to class.

*In relation, students have a tendency to lose or forget certain papers, worksheets or materials.

*Students are not adept at using basic classroom tools such as dictionaries.

*Students have trouble reading and using keyboards as well as a computer mouse.

*Students seem to have difficulty navigating multiple choice, matching, or fill-in-the-blank exercises. In addition, students' literacy of graphs, charts and grid-like worksheets pose difficulties.

I recognize that you see many of these issues on a regular basis and such issues are part of the on-going challenge in adult ESL education. I'm curious as to what other problems you see your students struggling with in terms of "classroom" skills. If you do indeed see such things would you please reply to mende019@umn.edu with a list of issues you come across or have seen in your classroom?

Thank you in advance for your help."

Melissa Mendelson
