4.    I apologize if you have already seen this informational video clip, but I just saw it for the first time today and wanted to share it with colleagues.
The video, "SHIFT HAPPENS” is about the global economy, competitiveness, and education.  I don’t know the source of the stats, but I do think they are believable.

Here are links to two versions of the video – actually, it’s more of a slide show: (slide and visual version)  (narrated version)

5.    FYI - There’s a comprehensive and useful article called “First, Teach Your Legislators” on page 4 of this KET quarterly newsletter:

Reminder  Questions about what research says about teaching adults how to read and write are particularly relevant as programs and teachers struggle with choosing the most effective ways to develop adults’ academic skills.  The Minnesota Department of Education, ABE Section, is sponsoring a practitioner research training to engage ABE, ASE, and ESL practitioners in trying out instructional strategies related to reading and writing.  The training is provided by Bella Hanson, Coordinator of the Evidence-based Practice Project, and Marn Frank, Adult Learning Disability Specialist at Learning Disabilities Association of Minnesota. Through this collaborative effort, we are able to have sixteen participants in the project.  Participants will receive 28 CEUs and a $500 stipend for completing the four session activities.  Participants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The deadline for applications is November 9, 2007.  Please see the attached letter for details and the application form.  I hope you will consider participating in this exciting opportunity!
