4.   MORE FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE: PERSONNEL RECORDS-LAW CHANGE JANUARY 2008

Effective January 1, 2008, Minnesota employers must provide "written notice" of the "rights and remedies" provided in the Minnesota Personnel Record Review and Access Act. None of these rights or remedies are new. What is new is that, starting January 1, 2008, employers must inform employees in writing about these rights and remedies.

(1). The employee’s right, upon written request, to review the employee’s “personnel records,” as those are defined by the Minnesota Personnel Record Review and Access Act.
(2). The employee’s right, after the review, to make a written request for a copy of those records.
(3). The employee’s right to dispute information contained in those records.
(4). The procedures for resolving disputes about the contents of those records.
(5). The employee’s right not to be retaliated against for asserting these rights.
(6). The remedies available under the Act for violations of the above rights, including the right to compel compliance, the right to recover actual damages plus costs, and, in cases of retaliation for asserting one’s rights, the right to recover back pay, reinstatement, other make-whole and equitable relief, and attorney fees.

5.
 Journeys 2008 UPDATE
We just want to remind you that we are now accepting entries for the book, "Journeys: Stories and Poems to Open Your Mind", the Minnesota Literacy Council’s annual publication of writings by adult learners, which will be published this spring.
To get started, go to the Journeys page of the MLC’s Web site:    www.themlc.org/Journeys       and click on the link to open the 2008 Student Entry Form. Then save the form to your computer and make copies of it for each entry you and your students would like to submit.
The 2008 Student Entry Form has had a couple of slight modifications since last month’s announcement. We have added two optional fields: Age and Country OR City and State of Origin. As I said, these are optional, but if your student feels like supplying either of those two pieces of information, we will add a little biographical tagline at the end of the entry – something like “Jane Adams is 32 and is originally from Chicago, Illinois,” or “Carlos Rodriguez is originally from Mexico.”

Thanks,
Guy Haglund

6.  The Weekly Workforce Update from the National Governor's Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices -
Workforce Update - January 14, 2008

7.    Literacy Minnesota and the Minnesota Community Education Association are now seeking presentation proposals for the 2008 ABE Statewide Summer Institute, Navigating the Future: Strategies for a Changing World, which will be held on August 6-8 at St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN.   Presentations will focus on the following broad areas:  ABE Program Management and Coordination, Promising Practices in Curriculum and Instruction, Accountability, and Community Education.  We strongly encourage new and experienced ABE staff to consider sharing their ideas and expertise with their colleagues at this statewide conference.  The Call for Presentations form can be accessed on the Literacy Minnesota website (http://www.literacyminnesota.org/Summer_Institute.html ).   If you are looking for ideas for presentation ideas, you might want to take a look at the list of priority ABE content areas on the MDE-ABE website: http://mnabe.themlc.org/Priority_Content_Areas.html.  This is NOT meant to be a comprehensive list, but it might help you identify a topic for your presentation.
Presentation proposals will be reviewed by the conference planning committee and will be selected on the basis of the clarity of the proposal, the relevance of the topic to ABE staff and priority content areas, a balance of topic areas, and logistical considerations. Proposals are due March 31, 2008, and presenters will be notified by May 16, 2008 whether their proposals have been accepted.  In an effort to support presenters and ensure high-quality presentations, a handbook of presentation tips is available at http://www.literacyminnesota.org/Summer_Institute.html.

We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal, and we look forward to seeing you this summer at the ABE Institute!

10.    For those who may not have received a notice on this from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and/or any groups that are interested in basic grantwriting training via webinar technology, please check this out:
You are invited to brush up on your strategic grantwriting with the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits at one of our upcoming Webinars specifically designed to reach nonprofits in Greater Minnesota--from Ely to Luverne, from Moorhead to Rochester and all points between.
Webinars combine two technologies – the internet and the telephone – to provide an integrated learning experience while sitting at your desk. You'll watch a live presentation on your computer (similar to watching a slide presentation at a live workshop) and you'll hear a presenter talking to you over the phone, just like in a conference call. You can interact with the presenter by talking or by typing, so you still have ability to ask questions and interact with your trainer.
Leslie Nitabach, MCN’s Development and Membership Manager, will be presenting three Webinars to kick off 2008, and we hope you can join us:
January 10Preparing for Grantwriting
This Webinar will explore common questions to help participants better understand the fundraising context and how they can strategically approach the entire development process.
January 17Writing Your First Grant Proposal
Whether you are writing your first grant proposal or need a quick refresher, this Webinar will cover how to make the most out of each section of a grant proposal, using the Minnesota Common Grant Application format as a guide.
January 24Maximize Your MCN Membership
This session will introduce you to the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and the benefits that MCN offers its growing membership of nearly 2,000 nonprofit organizations - including discounts on grantwriting trainings.

We hope to see you online soon!
Nicole

P.S. Another great way to bolster your 2008 fundraising plan is to attend one of our Philanthropy Leaders Breakfast Series events.  These morning sessions will take place in St. Paul and help connect nonprofits to leaders of some of Minnesota’s most active foundations.  Learn more and register today!
