13.  TECH TIP:  Setting Publisher Options - Part 2

The Options menu (Tools…Options) has 7 tabs that you can click on and change the settings.  The preferences in these tabs are preset for the most common settings.  Last time, we did the General Tab.  I will take you through the other tabs and point out settings that you may want to change.

The Edit tab:

  • Keep all the defaults here, but you may want to turn off Hyphenation.  I generally do not like hyphenating my text boxes so I uncheck the box next to “Automatically hyphenate…” If you decide later that you want to hyphenate a text box, you can click on Tools, point to Language, and click on Hyphenation.

User Assistance:

  • If you are a beginner to Publisher, you may want to click on the box next to Show Tippages.  You will get neat little tips while you are working on your publications.
  • Also, if you are a novice, click on the boxes next to Show ScreenTips on Objects and Use Helpful Mouse Pointers.
  • If you want to use a Wizard for blank publications, check that box.  You will get a panel on the left side every time you start a new publication to help you get started.

Print:

  • Nothing to set here.

Save:

  • If you want to automatically save your documents, check the Save AutoRecover… box.  Set the number of minutes you want wait for each Save.  10 minutes is the default – I set mine to 5 minutes.

Web:

  • Nothing to set here.  You should generally not be using Publisher as your web creation program.  Use FrontPage, or GoLive, Or DreamWeaver, or any other html editor to create your web pages.

Security:

  • If you are super security conscience, check the box next to Remove information from file properties on save.  The documents you create will not have identifying information in them – you are anonymous!
  • Don’t mess with Macro security – use the defaults.

That’s it – your Options Menu is set – now you can get to work on your publications.
