SW ABE - MARSHALL REGION

1. Exiting Students/CASAS

* Information on Exiting Students has been sent to everyone that needs the information. Exits are due back to Barb by February 25th.

* You have also been sent information on Level Changes for you classes. Be sure you are keeping current with your CASAS testing. Try to post test all students at least once during the year. (You have also received information on the CASAS testing for your students)

2. February Dates/ Holidays

* Monday, February 18th - Presidents Day Holiday - No classes!

3. Timesheets for February 1-15 are due in the office by noon on Monday, February 18th.

4. Inventory - You were given information on Inventory at the January meeting. A reminder that these should be turned in by April 15th.

5. "Save Your License Workshop" - Friday, March 14, 2008 - The Southeast and Southwest Regional ABE Professional Development Coordinators of the Minnesota Department of Education along with the ATLAS program at Hamline University offer this workshop opportunity to meet teacher re-licensure requirements. CEU’s indicating attendance will be provided. Registration information for this workshop can be found at http://www.hamline.edu/atlas Click on the Calendar of Events link.

If you wish to attend, you should do your own registration (but let Barb know). We will pay mileage if it is car-pooled; hotel - more than one to a room; one out of the area evening meal; and registration. You will also be paid wages according to the number of CEU's earned.

7. Greetings, Literacy Minnesota Members! Here are the February notes

8. Attached is an article on connecting mathematics instruction with reading. Bella Hanson (Word document here)

9. LDA of Minnesota has reviewed, purchased, and organized a variety of informal reading, spelling, and writing assessments appropriate for adults into a Test Bank. These assessments are now available for ABE teachers or tutor to borrow (if copyrighted) or receive as a paper copy (if permitted for classroom use)! The purpose of these informal assessments is to improve and direct literacy instruction. They are intended to supplement formal assessment with CASAS or TABE, not replace.

Attached are two files:

1. A pdf of NetNews, an online newsletter devoted to adult literacy, focused on the Test Bank. This winter issue provides information on the use of informal assessment, brief descriptions of each informal assessment available, and the requesting procedure. The last page is a Test Bank Request Form that can be printed and then mailed or faxed to LDA.

2. A Word document of the same Test Bank Request Form that can be edited online, saved as a file to your computer, and then sent as an email attachment to: lk@ldaminnesota.org
