ABE Promising Practices - "Remember that if you are interested, you can submit a Promising Practice also.......Pat"

"Greetings from the Literacy Minnesota Professional Issues Committee!  Please share this exciting new opportunity with your colleagues.

We are happy to announce our first featured ABE Promising Practice, “Individualized Learner Intakes.”  Thank you to Ann Gilbert, Intake and Placement Specialist at Adult Options In Education in Hopkins for sharing her excellent ideas and successful procedures.  To thank her, we have sent her a $20 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble.
Get your idea in for our next month’s feature!

Do you have a great idea you would like to share with your ABE colleagues?  Are you looking for some new ideas for your ABE class or program?  The Literacy Minnesota Professional Issues Committee has developed a vehicle for sharing promising practices in the ABE field. 

To submit your promising practice, follow these simple steps:

  1. Click here to download the Promising Practices template.
  2. Complete the user-friendly Microsoft Word form.
  3. Save your completed form with the Promising Practice title as the document name.
  4. Send your submission electronically to by attaching your completed form along with any supplemental materials.

The Professional Issues Committee will review all submissions.  If your promising practice is published on the Literacy Minnesota Web site, you will:

  • Earn 3 CEU’s for your first submission in the calendar year
  • Be entered into the annual drawing for a prize at the Summer Institute
  • Have the opportunity to be selected as the monthly featured submission to receive $20 gift certificate
  • Be recognized in an e-mail to your supervisor and other ABE professionals

We are counting on your participation to build this valuable online tool for resource-sharing among ABE practitioners throughout Minnesota.  There is the potential for thousands of promising practices to be available to all, but you must submit your idea.  It all starts with you!

3.    Summer Institute (formerly Summer Intensive) - August 8-10th - St. John's University - If you are interested in attending, please let Pat/Barb know.  As we know more about funding for the coming year, determination will be made as to who is able to attend.  (If you have been accepted to do a presentation, of course, you will be able to attend.)  I would like to know your interest ASAP.  Thanks.

First lady Laura Bush and national education leaders yesterday unveiled an online database that promises to provide parents across much of the nation the first accurate appraisal of how many students graduate from high school on time in each school system.

  "It's a Great Idea" Literacy MN Poster Session at the ABE Summer Institute     
Share one of your best Adult Basic Education ideas (marketing, teaching, celebrating, etc.) with your colleagues.  Design a poster to display your idea and create handouts to distribute to others so your great idea can be duplicated in programs throughout Minnesota. Posters will be on display in the Humphrey Theatre Foyer throughout the conference.  Poster session presenters will be asked to staff their posters after lunch on Thursday, August 9th.  Please see the attached document for more information.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Claudia Kinville at

    I just found out about two grant opportunities that you may want to consider.  See the NCFL announcement. 
If your program applies, please let me know and I would be happy to write a supportive letter from the ABE office.  I will not be endorsing programs that are outside of our state-funded ABE system. I think programs within our network of consortia have a “leg-up” on the competition due to your experience with accountability procedures and a history of positive outcome performance.

9.    Literacy Minnesota and the Minnesota Community Education Association (MCEA) are hosting their second annual summer conference focused on ABE issues.  The  ABE Statewide Summer Institute will held on the gorgeous St. John's University Campus in Collegeville August 8, 9, 10.

participate in. Pioneer Public Television will present a Media Literacy workshop to your group/s free of charge, no strings attached!
This workshop includes lots of free educational information, literacy information as well as information that explains how to become
selective TV viewers. This workshop is geared for parents, teaching them how they can help their (Birth-8) gain literacy skills. We also
provide a free storybook for the children of the participants.
