SW ABE - MARSHALL REGION

1. Summer Plans - Remember to let the ABE office know if there are any changes in your class schedules due to summer vacations or breaks. Enjoy the weather:)

2. Material Orders - I will be ordering materials during the first week in June. If you have not given me your Wish Lists, now is the time to do it! THIS IS THE LAST REMINDER!

3. Summer Institute (formerly Summer Intensive) - August 8-10th - St. John's University - If you are interested in attending, please let Pat/Barb know. As we know more about funding for the coming year, determination will be made as to who is able to attend. (If you have been accepted to do a presentation, of course, you will be able to attend.) I would like to know your interest ASAP. Thanks.

Well, folks, we did it! The Governor signed the E12 bill, without line item vetoing our appropriation. The additional funding will really help programs around the state better meet the adult education needs of our communities.

A great many people contributed to this victory. Special thanks to:

The lobbyists who worked so hard on this. In addition to Brad Lundell, the Literacy Minnesota lobbyist, we had incredible support from Sherry Munyon and Linda Sandvig - while they work directly for St. Paul, they really took a statewide perspective in hleping lead this fight.

Casie Moen, for her great energy competence as our parttime Public Policy Organizer - she did a bang up job in coordinating the legislative forum, maintaining the web site, and helping mobilize the field.

The members of the Literacy Minnesota Legislative Committee, who worked many hours in developing our platform, testifying at committee meetings, and providing students to testify.

The many legislators who recognized the vital needs met by ABE, and made these services a priority during a tough budget year.

And of course, all of you, who wrote letters, made phone calls, attended the Forum, and generally pestered legislators in the nicest way!

Thank you to everyone.

"It's a Great Idea" Literacy MN Poster Session at the ABE Summer Institute
Share one of your best Adult Basic Education ideas (marketing, teaching, celebrating, etc.) with your colleagues. Design a poster to display your idea and create handouts to distribute to others so your great idea can be duplicated in programs throughout Minnesota. Posters will be on display in the Humphrey Theatre Foyer throughout the conference. Poster session presenters will be asked to staff their posters after lunch on Thursday, August 9th. If your program applies, please let me know and I would be happy to write a supportive letter from the ABE office. I will not be endorsing programs that are outside of our state-funded ABE system. I think programs within our network of consortia have a “leg-up” on the competition due to your experience with accountability procedures and a history of positive outcome performance.
