Good mental health—what does that mean?  This is the topic for this month’s newsletter.  These are some of the ideas that Linda Nelson presented when she visited the Family Literacy Program.

A Healthy Self or Identity:
1)  You feel joy and happiness in who you are and in what you do. 2) You have self esteem.  You respect yourself.  3) You have self worth.  You enjoy being you and what you do counts.  4) You take responsibility for your actions.  5) You believe in your potential.  You set goals and take steps to accomplish them.

A Healthy Environment to Promote a Healthy Self:
1) You feel you are loved.  2)  You are accepted.  3) You have good communication.  4) You express your needs and show appreciation.

Systems that Contribute to a Healthy Self:
1) Family; 2) Friends; 3) School or Work and 4) Community.

Family values are beliefs about life that families want to pass on to their children.  Some of these values may be closeness and emotional support such as encouragement and cheerleading (You can do it.  A belief in a family member.)

When a family moves to another country, the family members may feel isolated, afraid, misunderstood, or rejected.  A family may miss worship centers, native food, clothing and shelter, native culture and extended family and friends.

Adjustments are made in all areas of life.  New language, culture, schools, food, clothing, housing and jobs are in your life while trying to keep your native culture.

Stress develops when there are so many changes in life.  Physical reactions take place in our bodies.  Learn to listen to your body.  These reactions in your body may be due to stress:  hair loss, teeth grinding, skin rashes, dry mouth, headaches, loss or increase of appetite, tension in neck and shoulders, upset stomach and diarrhea.
