Meeting Cancellations and Continuations - LTN
This message is a follow-up to information that I sent out yesterday regarding the redesign of state-sponsored ABE professional development.
I want to inform everyone that I have made a decision to cancel the 2006 Summer Intensive Training (SIT) event that was scheduled for August 14-17 at Breezy Point.
The decision to cancel Summer Intensive Training was a difficult one, but we did so because of these important concerns:
- we fund this event with money we are counting on to receive next year – and that money is definitely not secure due to the uncertainty of federal appropriations (President Bush’s office recommended to Congress a 66% cut to federal ABE funding, and although his first attempt failed to pass the Congress, we think a second attempt is possible/imminent.)
- our event coordination office (LTN) has been reduced to one person (Sarah Hoover) due to the resignation of Deb Simmons, and the logistics of SIT planning and coordination are very labor-intensive
- as we redesign our entire professional development approach over the next several months, we need to look flexibly at the current statewide ABE professional development conference and meeting structure and collect input from the intended audiences of those trainings
Because we have cancelled well in advance of the SIT date, no penalties will be incurred. In my discussions with Breezy Point conference staff, they have been gracious about this change and hope that we will continue to use Breezy Point as a venue for future professional development meetings.
Other decisions that we have made regarding the Literacy Training Network 2005-06 training and meeting calendar are:
A new LTN calendar will be available shortly – online at LTN.
I should also note that we are pleased that Sarah Hoover has agreed to coordinate all 2006 LTN activities and is eager to manage the LTN and provide essential supplemental services to the ABE field. Her continuity with the LTN services is greatly appreciated.
