Study Circle on Transitioning to Postsecondary Education

Southwest Region

April 27, 2007

 

This Study Circle involves two group meetings and discussion together on an Internet Discussion Board while working on tasks between the two group meetings.  CEUs will be awarded for 10 to 20 hours, depending on individual time on task between group meetings.  One staff from each region is encouraged to participate.  Maximum: 8

 

Outcomes of the Study Circle:

Understand various models ABE programs use to help students transition to post secondary education.

bullet

Decide on a plan for ABE programs to assist students in enrollment and success in post secondary education.

bullet

What can we do to academically prepare students for post secondary?

bullet

What can we do technically to help the students to enroll (forms, counseling, etc.)

bullet

Make a plan to collaborate with college(s) in the local ABE program’s area.

 

Organization of the Three Sessions

 

Before Session One

Promote Study Circle within the region.  Participants will register for the study circle.

Participants will receive cover letter with information about the study circle and readings to prepare for Session One.

Session One:  Two-hour session at the regional training.

Activities:

  • Discuss five models of ABE transition to postsecondary education

  • Discuss what model works best for your local ABE program.

  • Discuss what needs to be done to implement the model(s).

  • Agree on individual assignments for Session Two.

  • Decide timeline (how long to complete assignments and communicate on the discussion board, when meet again, etc.)

To Do List for Session Two (communication on the internet)

                        Participants agree to follow up on (assignments)

                        Agree on guidelines for participating in discussion board (how often, etc.)

 

Session Two:   Completing Assigned Tasks and Discussion Board Communication

  • Communicate on a discussion board immediately following first session.

  • Complete assigned tasks.

 

Session Three:   Meet together for two hours. 

  • Complete individual plans for local ABE program to implement activities for transition to post secondary education.

  • Discuss supports and barriers to change.

  • Make a group plan for next steps.
