TECH TIP:  Leave your computer on or turn it off

The primary consideration in deciding the answer to this question is NOT whether it is harmful to leave a computer on 24/7.  Computer components such as hard drives, motherboards, power supplies are not harmed by leaving them on all the time.  For example, the average life expectancy of a hard drive is 34 years, a mother board, 15 years, and power supply, 10 years.  You computer will probably outlive its useful to you whether or not you leave it on or turn it off.

The primary consideration in deciding whether to leave your computer on all the time is cost.  It will cost you about $65 dollars per year to leave your computer on all the time as opposed to $21 per year if you shut it down over night.   Sooo... if you got money to burn - leave it on.  If you want to save your dough - shut it off.

Please note:  Laptop computers have a higher likelihood of heat related problems, so it is not recommended to leave laptops on constantly.
