TECH TIP:  Adware and Spyware.

We talked about viruses - but what about adware and spyware - they can be very annoying and sometimes as harmful as viruses.  Often it puts very undesirable links on your computer.

Adware is a program that runs on your computer, monitors your surfing habits and delivers targeted advertisements, typically in the form of pop-up windows.

Spyware is a program that runs on your computer, monitors your Web surfing habits and reports the habits to a remote computer.

These things are annoying and use up precious system resources on your computer - as well as invade your privacy.  You don't want to get them on your computer.

Adware/Spyware is typically installed on your computer without you even knowing it,  Such websites as Kazaa (yes - the music sharing website), Xupiter (read about this one here - http://allentech.net/parasite/Xupiter.html) or Grokster (another peer to peer sharing site) do this when you install their free software.  So be careful what you install on your computer!  Ask - is it worth getting the other junk you will get installed to use their services.

So how do you get rid of it if it has been installed on your computer.  Here's 2 great FREE programs you can use.

Spybot  -  visit http://spybot.safer-networking.de/

Lavasofts Ad-aware  -  visit http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

I've used both of these FREE programs and they work great.
