TECH TIP:  Setting Publisher Options

Publisher has relatively few Options (or preferences) to set compared to Microsoft Word.  So before you get into your Publisher document, check out these options.  You only have to do this once – unless you change your mind and decide to change something.  So here we go – check out your Publisher options.

Click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.

There are only 7 tabs to worry about – and some of these you don’t have to even look at. (Word has 11 tabs loaded with tons of preferences in each one).

The General Tab

  • Measurement Units:  Most people will want to use inches – change to centimeters if you plan to move to Europe – or one of the other settings if you are a computer geek.  I use inches.
  • Show Basic Colors in Colors Palette – check this if you are color-challenged or just want things simpler – I like to see the full spectrum of colors
  • Use New Publication Task Pane at startup – If you want a bunch of options before you even start designing your layout, check this box.  I don’t check it – I want to get working immediately.  If you uncheck it, you can always get the options back by clicking on File and the New.

File Locations (File types and locations)

  • Publications:  I change the default file location for Documents.  It is set to save your Publisher files in the My documents folder.  I always like to save my new files right on the Desktop and then later move them into the folder I want to permanently store them in.  So, I change this setting to Desktop.  Click on Publication, click on Modify, click on Desktop, and click on OK – that’s it – you have set your default to Desktop for saving all new publications.
  • Pictures:  I don’t change this on – I do like to store my pictures in the My Pictures folder (located in My Documents folder).

Service Options

Go ahead and click on it and read it.  It’s an invitation to invade your privacy… No Thanks!

Next time, we will cover more tabs in the Options menu.
