Microsoft has a new version of the Antispyware program. They changed the name from Microsoft Antispyware to Microsoft Defender. It is still in Beta version (Beta version 2) which means it is going through a testing period. It has been streamlined and improved over the earlier Beta 1. And the best news is it is FREE.
The system requirements for downloading and installing Defender is at least a Pentium processor (a Pentium3 is preferred) running a minimum of 233 MHZ or better. Windows 2000 or higher is also required with at least 64 MB of RAM.
If you previously downloaded Antispyware Beta 1, you should uninstall it and download Microsoft Defender Beta 2. This is an excellent security tool and you will want to use it along side your other strategies to keep your computer spyware free.
After you download and install the software, you will be asked if you want to do a Quick Scan. It will take around 20 minutes to complete the scan (depending on the size of your hard drive). Defender will identify any programs that seem suspicious and give you the chance to delete them, quarantine them, or leave them alone. After you do your initial Quick Scan, you will want to do full scans after that.
If you choose to quarantine an item, it will be moved to a place on the hard drive that will not allow it to run. You can then later view all items in the quarantine area and delete them or restore them. You should not restore software with severe or high alerts. These items can harm you computer.
You can have Defender prevent spyware or other unwanted software from infecting your computer. Turn on Windows Defender Real Time Protection. Click on Tools, then General Settings, then you have to scroll down a little bit and click on the box next to Turn on real time protection. Be sure all the other boxes are checked also.
