TECH TIP – Gmail is here – Well, Sorta!

Great news for all you Gmail fans – it’s here – well sorta.  (More on that later).

What is Gmail?  Gmail stands for Google Mail and it is the free web-based email service provided by Google.

This counterpart to Hotmail and Yahoo mail and a host of other free web-based email providers boasts some exciting features not provided by others.  The primary feature is that it allows its users 1 gigabyte (1000 megabytes) of storage space.  That’s right – I didn’t mis-type!

In response to Gmail’s forthcoming, Hotmail announced that it is raising its storage space to a whopping 250 MB from its formerly meager 2 MB of space.

Yahoo just this week raised their storage space to 100 MB to try to keep pace with Gmail (although that is only 10% of Gmails current offering).

So, what’s the big deal with this Gmail.

No.1 – is the storage space – 1 GB.  You literally never have to throw away an email or attachment again. Also, it’s fast – very fast.  It has a nice clean interface – lots of white space – I love white space.  It has great management tools.

Now – about that “Gmail is here” – Sorta comment.   Gmail is in Beta mode.  That means they are testing it out with selected people.  It is not open to the general public – yet.  However, one can get a free Gmail account if they are invited to do so by a person who already has an account.  Otherwise, you just have to wait until it goes public..

You can read more about Gmail here – this is an excellent article.

If you are concerned about privacy, be sure to note how Gmail handles it’s advertisements.  Of course, remember, there is no such thing as privacy on the internet, anyway.
